Bella Kilonzo, one of the most creative and influential cartoonist in East Africa was born on September 13, 1973 in Busia, Kenya where his father (Mr. Wambua) was stationed to work as a police officer. It is here where a young handsome Wambua met and fell in love with a very beautiful girl called Nekesa (Bella's mother today).

Bella did not have an older artistic brother or sister to look up to for inspiration in Art because he is the first born in a family of seven. However, his parents were both artistic. Bella remembers how his father would at his free time make personal portrait paintings of his seniors in the police force and how his mother would weave pretty table clothes with amazing flower designs. His father (Benjamin) named him Bella in regard to the first son of Benjamin in the Bible. Kilonzo was Bella's great grandfather's name. It means "noise" in Kamba tribe. It was given to Bella by his grandfather, Mutiku. He died in 1982.

Left: Seven year old Bella. Drawing was already a big exciting hobby for him at this age.

His huge interest in creating stories from here onwards, naturally improved his writing skills. He mostly scored the highest marks in Composition and Insha writing in school.

Bella's interest in cartoons began in Nairobi somewhere before the age of six years old, that was when he started sketching cartoons he normally watched on TV or read from borrowed comic books.

At the age of around nine years old, he was turning some of his school exercise books into comics. His first comic book was called The Fun Dog. Right from a young boy to date, cartoons are to Bella a fulfilling way of escaping reality.
